Ok, so the car needed a MOT so any excuse for finding somewhere nice while you wait eh…..??
Dropped off the car at the garage, now got an hour/hour and a half to kill so off into the main streets of Merthyr we went. As I’m wheeling along the bottom of the High Street, it’s so interesting to see which shops have access and which don’t; strangely it seems that most of the charity shops have steps here rather than ramps, bizarre really when you think they’re trying to make as much money as possible? Would be much better just to put a ramp in so I can help them do that? Ah well, keep going up the High Street I said, the pedestrian area is good, a bit cobbly but not enough to make wheeling difficult and the sun was shining (which is unusual in the Valleys!) so we kept going. Further up the street, the access seemed much better but if we’d fancied a pasty, we were out of luck as there was no wheelchair access so something a bit nicer was called for.
Finally struck gold! Came across the old Plas Coffi/ Woodfired Pizza and Kitchen at the top of the High Street. (Think it’s the old McDonalds?) Wheelchair friendly entrance? Check. An open door so I don’t have to struggle to get in? Check. Plenty of room for my electric wheelchair? Check! Fab! In we went, a lovely young guy welcomed us and showed us a good table and gave us the menus. Looking around, there seemed to be quite a few accessible tables but also quite a few booths so maybe it might be a bit tricky if they were busy?
Good coffee, a gorgeous brownie and reasonable prices, am happy so far. Time to check out the toilets just to make sure it’s a place we can return to. They’re refurbishing the whole toilet area so the one disabled toilet was a bit ‘tatty’ at the moment but still usable. Good amount of grab rails, room for right handed transfer and a sink at the correct height. No dryer though but was assured that after the refurb, that’ll be sorted.
Their menu looked fabulous, wood fired handmade pizzas, burgers, paninis and lovely looking sides, homemade coleslaw, twice cooked handmade chips and loads of other things. Wine seems reasonable, £13 ish a bottle and a great looking ‘industrial’ decor.
All in all, a really great place to spend an hour or two, good service and a decent menu. Definitely somewhere to visit if you’re looking for somewhere to eat, day or night time, and with their forthcoming refurbishments, there’ll be a bar area too so hopefully will be even better! I definitely will be back…….!!
And thankfully, the car passed the MOT, YEY…………!!!!
